The situations first responders are generally faced with are inherently difficult and stressful. They are typically the first to arrive on the scene of events involving injuries and loss of life. They often provide emotional as well as physical support to traumatized survivors. These duties often put first responders at risk for secondary or vicarious traumatization.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has increasingly become a hot topic in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) world. As a PTSD sufferer, Anthony believes that the culture in medicine needs to change. “Get over it.” doesn’t work and never did. Anthony Guerne began his career in medicine in 1990 as an emergency medical technician. In 1994 he became a paramedic and began working in the City of New York. After almost 20 years as a clinician he took a full-time educational role as the simulation specialist at the NYIT-College of Osteopathic Medicine.

LINCOLN, Neb. - In 2017, more first responders died by suicide than in the line of duty. That's according to a study done by the Ruderman Family Foundation.
Here in Lincoln, Fire and Rescue says it's actively working to end the stigma surrounding mental health.
